For millions of displaced families and their host communities, access to clean and affordable cooking solutions remains a challenge. Traditional cooking methods, such as firewood and charcoal, not only expose families to harmful smoke but also contribute to deforestation and climate change. Recognizing this urgent need, SOLCO is leading a transformative initiative to transition 250,000 households to solar electric cooking by 2027.
Solar e-cooking harnesses the power of the sun to provide a safe, reliable, and cost-effective alternative to polluting fuels. Unlike charcoal, which can cost families hundreds of dollars per year, solar energy is free and readily available. By switching to e-cooking, households save money while also reducing their carbon footprint.
Beyond economic benefits, this shift has profound health and environmental impacts. Indoor air pollution from traditional stoves is a major health hazard, causing respiratory diseases and premature deaths, particularly among women and children. By eliminating toxic fumes, solar e-cooking improves health outcomes and enhances overall well-being. Moreover, reducing dependency on firewood helps curb deforestation, preserving forests and biodiversity in refugee-hosting regions.
Through partnerships, innovative financing models, and capacity-building programs, SOLCO is ensuring that clean cooking solutions reach those who need them most. As part of the Global Electric Cooking Coalition, the initiative is helping shape a sustainable future where every household, regardless of location, can access modern, efficient, and eco-friendly cooking technology.
